Apples to Apples

Whether the economy is good or poor, many remodeling and repair decisions come down to price. It is not uncommon to hear a potential client say that he/she wants to get three “estimates” to compare prices. There are many other factors that should go into the decision making process, including the contractor’s experience, its reputation for customer service and the client’s intuitive feeling about the salesman and company. Yet, many use price as the main factor. These people need be very careful.

When comparing prices, one should be comparing “apples to apples”, or more precisely, “cooking apples to cooking apples”. What I mean here is that to get an accurate comparison between estimates, those estimates need to be offering similar services and materials from the beginning of the project, through the end and the warranty. If they are not similar, the client needs to evaluate what is being and not being offered and adjust accordingly. This may be difficult as one main reason that potential clients seek out professional is that they do not have the experience in this area.
